Building Curriculum

Sheridan Elementary School operates an integrated library program.  In following the guidelines of this program, lessons are planned and taught cooperatively between the classroom teacher and the media specialist.  This allows for using the library for all subjects and making the lessons much more meaningful.

The media center is always open for students to check out on a daily basis.  Library books and periodicals are checked out and due back in one week.  Students in Kindergarten may checkout 1 book.  Students in grades 1-2 may check out 2 books.  Students in grades 3-5 are allowed to check out 2 books and 1 magazine.

If a book is lost or damaged, a replacement fee is charged.  If the book is later found, then the money will be reimbursed through the school office less 50 cents handling fee.

All library books must be returned prior to withdrawal from school.

Library Media Guidelines
-  Don’t bother other people
-  Put things back where they belong
-  Bring things back on time
-  Being respectful is expected

*If these guidelines are not followed, consequences that follow classroom discipline will take place.

    - Music

At Sheridan School children learn music the same way they learn language.  They imitate what they hear, improvise music and then learn to read and write music.  Movement, speech, song and instrumental playing are integrated to teach the elements of music.

The USD 475 Music Curriculum Guide is the basis for this musical learning, and each child experiences the many pleasures of making music and of informed listening.  All classes meet for 20 minutes and first through fifth grade classes meet for 30 minutes on an even or odd day schedule.

    - P.E

Students participate in P.E. on the same even or odd day schedule as music.  P.E. also follows a district wide curriculum and emphasizes activities for a healthy lifestyle.

    - Programs

Each student will have the opportunity to participate in at least one performance showing off his/her special talents and skills each year.  This may be in the form of a special music or P.E. program or various classroom opportunities.  Parents are always invited and welcome to attend, whether it is during the day or in an evening.
